First Family Camping Trip

Oh hi - remember me?!  I used to blog about stuff sometimes and then all of a sudden my life got busy.  I had a final exam two weekends ago that I had to study for - eww I know an exam in the summer?!  How is that fair?  Thank you for your sympathy.  After that I invested a majority of time in some serious catch up on missed sleep.  And then suddenly we were going camping.  What?!  Camping?! I can't even remember the last time I went camping. This involved a serious amount of prep and planning.  And well we camped - and survived! Here's how it all went down.

As I mentioned before, I am guessing that hadn't been camping probably since I was 18.  Steve - I am not sure but probably just as long. We had no gear.  We had no idea what gear to get.  There was a lot of Googling going on 'How to pack a cooler for camping' and 'Camping for beginners'.  Let's just say that we looked completely ridiculous walking out of the store adorned with a tent, two coolers, two camp chairs, an air mattress, a hot dog/marshmallow cooking stick, bug spray, etc.  I wish I had photographic evidence of this.  We looked like camping rookies indeed.

On Friday evening after work we packed up the car - with what we thought was essential and headed to Canisbay Lake Campground in Algonquin Park which is roughly 3.5 hours north-east of Toronto with two of our good friends Chris and Caitlin. The entire ride there, and the week leading up to the trip, I obsessively inquired about 'what if we run into a bear?'  I mean it is bear country after all.  And I've watched enough of The Colbert Report to know all about the dangers of bears. However, I was assured that I didn't have anything to worry about.  Until we arrived to this..unbelievable.

Since we had left so late - we arrived at pretty late at night.  This made getting out of the car a bit difficult - but I built up all the courage I could so I could attempt to help Steve set up our tent.  Let's just say that at that time of night - with bears looming in the area I am not the most cooperative helper.  Thankfully I married a very patient and understanding man.  I decided to instead open a beer to calm my nerves and frustration.  Our camping mate (and camping guru), Caitlin, decided to have a midnight snack.  Apparently this guy thought that he did too and stole the bag of ranch crispers right out of her hands - what a jerk.

I managed to sleep quite easily the first night (and the second) - could have been the beer(s) I consumed - and was much more at ease in the morning.  Actually waking up in the woods is quite refreshing.  I was surprisingly excited to take advantage of the day.  So as a team we quickly cooked up a feast for breakfast and got ready.  Seriously there is nothing more rewarding than cooking your meals over an open campfire.  Food just tastes better.

Saturday afternoon we took a trip down the road to Tea Lake Dam and set up our chairs in the river to soak up some sun and enjoy the awesome scenery.  We ended up spending a good majority of the day in there - until we discovered that there were some leeches looming in the waters.  Normally I would be deathly afraid - but I was enjoying myself too much to bother caring.  Can you blame me?

We settled in for the evening after cooking another feast and Steve tended to the fire.  I mean he seriously tended to it.  Who knew my husband was so great at building fires - without lighter fluid.  I am pretty impressed (and comforted) with his fire making abilities.

Sunday morning was depressing as we ate, hung out, and dismantled our campsite.  I wish we were all able to stay longer - but we all have jobs that required us to be there on Monday.  Huge bummer.  We pack up and said good bye to our temporary home - and headed to the beach to get in some last minute weekend rays and hang outs before making the long trek back to the city.

The only good part about driving home - was that this trip was in the daylight so we were able to at least enjoy the scenery.

We arrived home safely on Sunday around 9:00 p.m. dirty and tired from an awesome weekend away.  We were both impressed that two reformed city kids were able to kick back and enjoy the awesomeness of the wilderness.  And surprisingly enough - I loved it so much that I can't wait until our next trip.  This girl is no longer afraid to camp - however she is still afraid of bears.  But nothing a bear bell, a bear whistle, and some bear spray can't mitigate.

What I am Loving Wednesday

There are two things that have kept me smiling today...

The song 'Party Rock Anthem' from LMFAO.  When I hear it I want to stop what I am doing and dance.  I dare you to listen to it and not feel the urge to boogie [even just a little].  This song screams living room dance party.  Someone host one please?!

The fact that I won the Moon River Pearls Pearl Earring giveaway that Tiffany from The Bride-onicles of a Soon to be Bride hosted. Aren't they pretty?  I can't wait to receive them and put them on.  This totally made my day.  I never win anything. ANYTHING!  What a great prize. Thanks Tiffany!!

Tail Wagging Tuesday | Summer Vacation

Oh hallelujah - today Tail Wagging Tuesday is officially off hiatus.  Basil is super stoked.  As am I.  I am hoping this isn't just a tease because I really do like looking at the blogging communities furry friends.  Plus it gives me an opportunity to talk about my cat.  Since I don't have children - there is a little transference going on.  How can I deny my natural motherly instincts?  With that....let's talk cat.

Topic: Summer Vacation
Basil was born and raised in tropical Vietnam {you can read about it here}.  So this guy is no stranger to the awesome powers of the sun.  He thrives on it.  He lives for it.  Oh maybe that's me I am talking about?  He's a cat - he likes the summer heat.  One of the many reasons cats are so awesome.

This is our first summer in our new apartment - and we don't have AC [yet] so Basil has been spending a lot of time in the open front window [don't worry there is a screen].  He's basically the neighbourhood watch cat.  He tells us when there is nonsense going on - he let's us know when raccoons get into the green bin.  He's actually quiet helpful. And sometimes he likes to cool down by the the fan.  I mean seriously - this dude wears a fur coat in the summer!

But sometimes - he sleeps on the job!

Wedding ABC's | Getting Ready

{G} Getting Ready
After I got my hair did - I went back to my room to start getting ready.  Actually I sat there and hyperventilated a bit. This was the first time that morning I had been left alone. It was the first time I started to feel really nervous {well after the whole weather ordeal}.  I had a serious case of butterflies. I am not a lady who enjoys being centre of attention - at all. Since I didn't want to be a blubbery mess during the ceremony I decided I should get out a good cry {also I didn't want to ruin my yet-to-be-applied make-up}.  Crying was easy to accomplish just by practicing my vows.  I couldn't get through writing or saying them without a ton of tears or getting choked up.  Who knew I was so emotional!?  OK I did - I can't get through a sappy love story without shedding some tears not to mention my own wedding!

Thankfully I wasn't left alone for too long -  Randalin, Krysten and Jen had offered to come help me get into my dress , keep me company, and get ready with me. I really needed them to be there and will be forever thankful.  They helped calm my nerves - big time, not to mention the bottle of champagne that accompanied them.

Randalin and Krysten took some beautiful shots while Jen helped me figure out how to get into my dress {thanks for thinking about that}. Who knew getting into a wedding dress was so complicated?!  The lady at the bridal shop made it seem so simple.  However Jen did a great job and only missed one loop while tying the corset. Jen persevered and got it done up perfectly.

Of course I did forget to do one thing before I got into my dress...brush my teeth!  I brushed them earlier - but I had since drank a coffee, champagne, and beer and needed some fresh breath for that first kiss.  It was worth the risk.

And Steve managed to get ready on his own - with a little help from mom of course.

Missing something?  Get caught up here as I recap our wedding, from A-Z.

Beer

I would like to say that I have a love hate relationship with beer {probably leaning more towards love}.  One time last summer I vowed to kick drinking it for 21 days.  During the best part of the season when patios are open and beer drinking is plenty.  Obviously I wasn't thinking clearly. I think I lasted all of three days - and vowed to never give it up again.  A much easier commitment.

If you know me - I am sure that you have heard me claim how much I love beer.  It's always been my drink of choice.  It's delicious.  It's refreshing.  It's great after a bad day at work.  It's great when meeting a few friends - to catch up.  I am not saying that my life revolves around beer - I am just saying that's it's a staple in my lifestyle.  Things are more enjoyable if you are able to kick back and enjoy a brew of your choice.  Am I not right?

The reason why I don't like it - well this is obvious.  Beer does nothing for my figure.  Unless you consider the beer baby I am growing.

As you can see I am no stranger to this wonderful drink - even 31(ish) years ago.  It all makes sense now.
